Christmas Tree, Snow Light

About the photograph

I made this in March 2018, on my first visit to the Christmas Tree. It is a busy place, with cars, taxis and a bus, so I stood off to the side, away from the busiest point. Snow was falling, the wind was light, and a 61 second exposure turned the moving cloud into those long pale streaks. The round dots are falling snow close to my lens, lit by the flash of photographers standing nearby. I did not use a flash myself. Nothing was added.

What it does for the room

The frame is tall, a 2:3 vertical, with the tree low and a lot of open space above it. That makes it suit a narrow wall, the space beside a bed, or above a console in a hallway. For the wall above a sofa or a bed, choose 24×36 or 40×60; 16×24 fills a smaller wall. The tones are soft whites and warm greys rather than hard black, so it sits easily with light oak, linen, stone and grey textiles, and reads as calm rather than cold.

Real photograph

One exposure, made on location. No composites, no generated content. Tone and light are refined in editing, as with any fine-art print.

Where it fits

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and reading corners in Japandi, Scandinavian and quiet minimalist homes. As a gift, it suits someone who has stood at this tree in a Hokkaido winter, or anyone who wants a quiet wall, and the story of the snow and the borrowed flash is there to tell when it is opened.
