Biei Hokkaido Lone Birch in Snow
Just after sunrise at minus 10 degrees, from a snow bank by a roadside guard rail: a lone birch on a Biei hill, three small branches in the snow, and nothing else. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
I made this at 06:51 on 8 March 2018, just after sunrise, from the edge of a road in Biei, looking across at the birch and the hill beyond. The sky was overcast, no snow was falling, there was no wind, and it was about -10C, which is normal there. I made it from the snow bank beside the road’s guard rail, looking across at the birch alone on its hill.
What it does for the room
The print is almost all soft white and pale grey, so it reads as calm rather than cold. The dark branches give the eye one place to rest. It sits well with light oak, linen, stone and grey textiles. Over a sofa or a bed, choose 18×24 or 30×40 in the tall 3:4 crop, or 24×24, 30×30 or 40×40 in the square crop. For a narrow wall, a hallway or a shelf, 9×12, 12×16, 12×12 or 20×20 keeps it quiet and in proportion.
