Signed limited edition
Ridge Tree, First Light
A view of this Biei tree you will not find elsewhere: from across the road at 6:47 in the morning, the bushes fall away and the lines of snow lead straight up to it. A signed, numbered edition on cotton rag. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
I made this at 06:47 on 7 March 2018, near Biei town. From other angles this tree is surrounded by bushes. From this spot, across the road, they all fall away to the right, so I lined up half a roof of a house and the snow piled along the roadside as diagonals leading up to it. Some snow was falling, and the sun came from the east, on the right. It is not a recognised view of this tree.
What it does for the room
Most of the frame is pale sky and soft grey snow, with one small dark tree near the top, so it reads as calm rather than busy. Early sun from the right picks out the texture of the drifts, which keeps the black and white from feeling cold. It sits well with light oak, linen, stone and warm grey walls. For the wall above a sofa or bed, the 40×50 gives the hills room to breathe; 24×30 suits a console or hallway, and 16×20 a smaller wall.
Real photograph
One exposure, made on location. No composites, no generated content. Tone and light are refined in editing, as with any fine-art print.
Where it fits
Living rooms, bedrooms, a quiet study or an entryway, in Japandi, Scandinavian or minimalist homes. For someone who has driven the winter roads around Biei, or who simply wants a calmer wall, it makes a considered gift with a story to tell when it is opened.
