Open edition print
Oyako no Ki Open Sky
The Parent and Child Trees of Biei under a wide, bright opening in the cloud, three minutes before it closed to a single point of light. One long exposure, a calm black and white print with open snow below. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
These are Oyako no Ki, the Parent and Child Trees, in Biei. I made this on 7 March 2018, about an hour before sunset. I waited there for the cloud to move into a shape I liked, and in this one-minute exposure it opened wide and bright above a dark band of sky. Three minutes later the cloud closed to a single point of light; that frame is my signed limited edition, Oyako no Ki, Rising Cloud. This is the wider, brighter moment just before it.
What it does for the room
Most of the frame is soft grey sky and white snow, so the print reads as calm space on the wall rather than a busy picture. The trees sit small and low, which gives the eye one quiet place to rest. At 30×30 or 40×40 inches it holds the wall above a sofa or a bed on its own. At 20×20 or 24×24 inches it suits a narrower wall, a hallway or the space above a dresser. The 12×12 inch size works on a shelf or in a pair. The greys are soft rather than stark, and they sit easily with light oak, linen, stone and warm white walls, so the room stays warm.
