Biei Hokkaido Lone Tree
One tree on a Biei hillside that is not on any tourist map, photographed in a single 121-second exposure as the cloud slid past. Mostly open snow and soft grey sky, so the room around it feels quieter. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
I made this on a hillside in Biei in March 2018, a little after five in the afternoon. It is not one of the known spots; I scout every area I go to completely, so I do not miss a place beside the ones already known. That day was mostly overcast, with some wind and snow now and then, and it was always cold, cold hands and cold feet, with few people coming and going. The shutter stayed open for 121 seconds, which is why the clouds became soft bands of light.
What it does for the room
The image is mostly white and soft grey, with one dark tree set to the left, so it gives the eye a single place to rest. The greys are gentle, not stark, and sit easily beside light oak, linen, plaster and stone. For a desk or a narrow shelf, 8×10. Beside a bed or in a hallway, 16×20. Above a bed or a small sofa, 24×30. For the wall above a full sofa or a long sideboard, 32×40 or 40×50, as one calm piece on its own.
