Biei Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree of Biei above a hollow of wind-carved snow, photographed in March 2018. One spruce, a soft grey sky and quiet white space, in black and white. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
A few minutes later I framed the tree another way: a small hollow in the snow in front of me, a few dry stems standing in it, and the spruce beyond under a heavy grey sky. Fine snow hung in the air and softened the distance. It is a single instant, so the hollow and the drift hold every detail.
What it does for the room
Most of the frame is open snow, so it gives a wall space to breathe rather than filling it. Above a sofa or a sideboard, choose 24×36, 32×40, 40×50 or 40×60. Above a bed, 20×30 or 24×30 sits well. For a hallway, a reading corner or a pair of shelves, the square 12×12, 20×20 or 24×24 works, and 8×10 or 8×12 suits a desk or a small wall. The palette is soft white and warm grey with one dark spruce, so it sits quietly with light oak, linen, stone and pale plaster, and it reads as soft rather than cold.
