Tree and Sapling in Snow
A grown tree and its sapling on a quiet Biei slope at minus 10 to 15 degrees, found by driving away from the tourist spots. Sixty seconds of open shutter smoothed the clouds into soft streaks. Free replacement if it arrives flawed, and a 30-day return if it does not feel right on your wall.
About the photograph
I made this on the afternoon of 7 March 2018 in Biei, Hokkaido. I drove a rental car so I could find places away from the tourist spots, and this slope was one of them. Most days there were between -10 and -15C. I left the shutter open for sixty seconds, which smoothed the clouds into soft streaks above the hill.
What it does for the room
The image is mostly white and pale grey, with the tree drawn in fine dark lines, so it reads as soft rather than cold. The tones sit easily beside light oak, linen, stone and warm grey. It is a tall portrait print. Over a sofa or a bed, 24×36 or 20×30 gives a finished look. On a narrow wall, a hallway or beside a window, 12×18 or 16×24 works well. For a large open wall, 40×60 holds the space on its own. Smaller rooms and shelves suit 8×12.
